IMPACT OF TWO COUNSELLING INTERVENTIONS ON SOCIAL WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN OF WIDOWS IN ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

The study examined the impact of two counseling interventions on the social well-being of children of widows in Abeokuta, Ogun State. A sample of 143 junior secondary school students made up the sample size of the study. Questionnaires were distributed to the respondents and the data collected were computed using a one-way Analysis of covariance and Fisher’s protected ‘t’ test. The findings showed that there are no significant differences in the post-test scores of the participant's social well-being. The social well-being of the participants did not significantly due to gender. The findings also inferred that assertiveness training was more effective than cognitive learning techniques in improving the strained social well-being of the children of widows. It was, therefore, recommended that harmful widowhood practices against children of widows should be discouraged, bills against maltreatment of widows’ children should be passed. Also, counseling programs should be given to the victims of harmful widowhood practices.
