Abstract

This study investigated the Impact of guidance services specifically placement, information and counselling services on the academic achievement of senior secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria. the researcher used a descriptive survey research design, that targeted a population of 36,188 SS2 students, out of which a sample of 379 was drawn using Krejcie Morgan's formula and random sampling techniques. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the questions, and t-tests for the situation hypotheses at alpha level of 0.05. The research is grounded in Social Cognitive Theory and self-determination theory, and the findings consistently revealed a high Impact of placement, information, and counselling guidance services on students' academic performance. These findings indicate that while guidance services may be present, placement and information guidance’s services has high significant impact on academic achievement of senior secondary school student. However, the hypothesis of no significant impact of counselling services on student academic achievement was accepted. This suggest that while placement and information services are effective tools for enhancing academic performance in FCT, the impact of counselling services was not statically significant. This study recommended that student should be encouraged to have necessary information from counsellors in respect to their future career and The government, education bodies and also counselling head should intensively provide a qualified school counsellor so as to enable build confident in the mid of the student toward the counsellors.
