IMPACT OF BROKEN HOMES ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ALIMOSHO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE

Abstract

Broken homes are difficult for everyone, particularly children, and have an impact on their cognitive development and academic performance. The study looked into the impact of broken families on academic performance among secondary school students in Alimosho, Lagos State. The study utilised a descriptive research methodology and evaluated five hypotheses using an independent t-test at a significant level of 0.05. The study used a self-designed questionnaire called the "Impact of Broken Homes on Academic Performance Questionnaire (IBHAPQ)" with a reliability coefficient of 0.73. Five schools were chosen using stratified sampling, and 150 participants (75 males and 75 females) were selected using systematic sampling. The study's findings indicated that students in senior secondary school who came from broken households had significant effects on their academic performance, classroom interactions, cognitive development, and social adjustment. There is a considerable gender difference in the social adjustment of students from family Based on the study's findings; parents should stay with their children to ensure their well-being. Furthermore, the school's counselling staff should be well-prepared to help the students from broken homes in order to reduce the impact on their academic performance
