EFFECTS OF THE USE OF WHATSAPP VOICE CALL TEACHING PLATFORM DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN IN SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the use of whatsApp voice-call teaching platform on the performance of sociology students. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Expost-facto design was employed for this study. A sample size of 50 students from sociology department was used. The researcher made use of the available scores of year 1 and year 2 before the lockdown, and the same students were used for whatsApp voice-call teaching platform and tested again with the same test items to ascertain their performance during lockdown due to COVID – 19. The obtained data were analyzed using Descriptive Statistics and t-test statistical tools. The result from the study revealed that the use of traditional teaching method is more effective than the use of whatsApp voice call teaching method and the difference in the effectiveness is significant. It was recommended that educators and researchers are to explore other types of whatsApp teaching platforms and should also bear in mind to always carry along the students in an area where electricity is not consistent.
