EFFECTS OF SCHOOL COUNSELLING ON ADOLESCENTS’ ACQUISITION OF LIFE SKILLS

Abstract

The school counselling programme is promoted in the curriculum to provide assistance to all members of the school population before and in times of needs. Adolescents are a large part of this population that requires life skills to overcome the developmental tasks associated with challenges of adolescence. These include trainings in self esteem, values, negotiation, goal setting, decision making, communication, assertiveness and finding help.. The paper is premised on G. Stanley Hall’s theory of stress and storm in adolescence. The paper sought response to a null hypothesis,: Ho1, There will be no significant difference in the opinion of counsellors in senior secondary schools and those in tertiary schools that, school counselling can improve adolescents’ acquisition of life skills. The study used; School counselling Effects Inquest Questionnaire (SCEIQ) questionnaire to collect data. Two hundred and fifty counsellors responded.. Data generated were analyzed using t- test. Results showed that, there was significant difference in the opinion of counsellors in senior secondary schools and those in tertiary institutions on the effects of school counselling on adolescents’ acquisition of life skills, thus, the null hypothesis was rejected. Even though there were differences in the opinion of counsellors on the effect of school counselling on adolescents’ acquisition of life skills, result confirmed that school counselling has impact on adolescents’ adjustment to the challenges faced in this period of life.
