EFFECT OF GROUP COUNSELLING ON STUDENTS’ NOTETAKING AND CONCENTRATION IN JUNIORSECONDARYSCHOOLS IN NASARAWA SOUTH, NASARAWASTATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study examined the Effect of Group Counselling on Students’ note taking and concentrationin Junior Secondary Schools in Nasarawa South, Nasarawa State. Quasi experimental, pre-test, post-test design was adopted for the study, which involved Junior Secondary School students. 50students comprising of 25 JSS 3 students were assigned to experimental groups and 25JSS3students assigned to the control group as well, using random sampling technique. Astandardized18-item open ended questions with 8 sections developed by Bakare (1977) was adoptedand4sections extracted to measure study habits of concentration and note taking in junior secondaryschools in Nasarawa South, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The results from the hypotheses showssignificant effect between group counselling and study habits (i.e concentration and note taking)among students. Those students who were well counselled on their concentration and note takingskills did perform excellently well in their academics. The study recommended that theGovernment should include Study Habit as topic in the social studies curriculumof the primaryand junior secondary schools in the country. And every primary and secondary schoolsinNigeria should have functional Guidance and Counselling Department, to guide the pupils andstudents in their cognitive, affective and psycho-motive domains; the pupils and studentsall round development to enable them fit in properly in
