Abstract

The study investigated coping strategies for academic excellence among married undergraduates in Benue State. Many married students achieve academics excellence despite marital challenges. This seems partly due to their ability to adopt strategies to cope with academic rigor. The study adopted descriptive survey design, 400 final year married undergraduates were purposively sampled from two randomly selected publics universities in Benue state.Three research questions guided the study. Data were collected using questionnaire through personal visit and analyzed with percentages, ANOVA and t-test statistics. It was found that married undergraduates employed some strategies (family planning, abstinence, minimizing semester course registration) to cope with academic rigor, economic status has no significant impact on students’ coping strategies for academic excellence (F6, 393 =.644, p= 0.695). There was significant gender mean difference in coping strategies of married undergraduates (t398 = 7.115, p=.000). Academically disadvantaged single students should emulate married undergraduates’ relevant coping strategies for their academic excellence, married undergraduates should properly use their economic status to adopt coping strategies in the universities, married female undergraduates should adopt coping strategies like their male counterparts for academic excellencein public universities in Benue stateamong others.
