A THEORETICAL REVIEW OF PERCEIVED EFFECTIVENESS OF COGNITIVE BEHAVOURAL THERAPY (CBT) THERAPEUTIC MODEL IN FOSTERING MENTAL HEALTH OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS

Abstract

This paper is a theoretical review of perceived effectiveness of CBT therapeutic model in fostering mental health of Nigerian students. Youth’s mental health problems are on the increase. This is evident in the increased number of youths with diagnosable symptoms of mental health problems like: depression, anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactive disorder. As a result of this development, there are rising cases of school shootings and suicidality with grave fatalities among the youth. This study therefore, is an encapsulation of the effectiveness of the CBT therapy model as evidenced in many international and local studies with the aim of pointing counsellors to the need of including it in their therapeutic interventions. To achieve the purpose of the paper, the concept of mental health, the CBT and its use as a therapeutic approach in dealing mental health wellness among Nigerian youth were explored. The study relied upon literature gathered from researchers who have conducted researches on the subject matter. Recommendations based on the reviewed study were offered for the benefit of counsellors and significant others in the helping profession.
